Well, here's my inked version of "Forbidden Planet Jen" from Liberty Meadows. I did some re-working here and there and re-did Jen's face and hair to make her look more like Uncle Frank Cho's vision of loveliness. NOT EASY! Anyhoo, much cursing and several tubes of white-out later, it is finished. I am somewhat pleased with the results, but as I stated earlier, inking has never been one of my strengths. That being said, let me know what you think.

Inked on Strathmore smooth Bristol Board with Prismacolor Premier, Pitt and Micron Art Pens with corrections made with Montana Marker Acrylic Paint Pens. Time: Too $#%@ing long.

Cool drawing!

I love the details and shading on Robby the Robot. You nailed the faces and expressions of crew members (well, they did look something like that in the movie! :D)!
Why did you decided to emulate Frank's style when drawing the girl? I do love his illustrations, guy draws some of most beautiful female faces, and your rendering is tops, but just asking is there some particular reason on that?

Thanks for the kind words and the input. So far as the crew members go, Frank's animal characters are pretty much standard archetypes that are easily interchangable with archetypes that appear in everywhere in pop media. As such Ralph the Bear made a good Commander J. J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and Leslie the Frog as Cookie, the Cook (Earl Holliman) - even though I opted to go with a standard United Planets crew uniform rather than the rather generic sailor's working uniform Holliman wore in the movie.

The illustration was done as an excercise for the FOCer's Sketch Blog. The theme of the week was Frank Cho's comic strip, Liberty Meadows. The gal in the picture is Jen, a supporting character from the strip and the sultry vixen roomate of the strip's virginal heroine, Brandy. As you can tell, I tried my best to have Leslie and Ralph appear as they do in the Liberty Meadows comic strip and I feel I succeeded in the pencil version, but Jen just didn't look like "Jen". I usually try to put my own spin on characters, but when they are as iconic as a Frank Cho female, they just aren't that character unless they look like Frank's version. Also, I have never been that keen on the way I draw women's faces so I looked at this as a challenge to see if I could capture Frank's style while still having it look like I drew it. I think I succeeded on some level.

My inking leaves a lot to be desired and I am quite rusty as I have been away from the drawing board for the better part of 15 years. Overall, I was pleased with the results and see it as another excercise in getting my skills back up to where they were all those years ago and perhaps even surpassing that level as I am much more patient with myself now than I was then.

Thanks for clearing things up. I was not aware of FOCer's Sketch Blog, looked it up and it is interesting!

Good call on Cookie's uniform, that sailor like outfit did felt out of place.

Your inking style is fine! It's got certain "newspaper strip" feel to it, which is cool! I, on the other hand, can't ink to save my life...
